The National Monument on Dam Square in Amsterdam is a monument commemorating the Second World War in the Netherlands. The monument is the focal point of the annual National Commemoration of the Dead on 4 May. Around the pylon is a curved memorial wall in which twelve urns with earth have been bricked in. The urns are filled with earth from honorary cemeteries in the former eleven provinces, and the twenty-two honorary cemeteries in the former Dutch East Indies. In front of the urns from the provinces are the provincial coats of arms, and in front of the urn from the Dutch Indies is the coat of arms of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. On the inside of the memorial wall is a text by the Dutch poet Adriaan Roland Holst, with lettering designed by Jan van Krimpen.
